LAKHIMPUR: Massive reaction against the 'ridiculous' statement made by Union Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy, RK Singh against the agitation against mega river dam projects continues in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district. Various organizations of the State as well as of the two districts have condemned the Union Power Minister vehemently for insulting the mass agitation initiated by various organizations against the contentious Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) being constructed by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in the Assam-Arunachal border area under the Dhemaji district.

Notably, while visiting the SLHP on June 14, RK Singh remarked that the mega river dam project with 2000 MW installation capacity would not impact the biodiversity of the region and more hydroelectric projects would be set up in Arunachal Pradesh in the upcoming days to harness the hydropower potential of the region. He also said that the SLHP would mitigate the flood problem of the State. Moreover, the Union Minister claimed that some NGOs had initiated a stir against the mega river dam project by taking funds from foreign countries.

Regarding these statement, the Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) burnt the effigy of RK Singh at Lakhimpur Girls' HS School Chariali of North Lakhimpur town on Thursday and slammed him by shouting various slogans.

Leading the protest programme, Lakhimpur district unit AJYCP president Hiranya Dutta made a scathing attack on the Minister by criticizing him with strong terms for insulting the mass agitation against SLHP.

"The Union Power Minister stirred the hornet's nest by making baseless statements. We have demanded him to make public who received funds from foreign countries. We have also demanded to arrest them if his government has information. Then national president of BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders of the State also took to the streets to protest against the SLHP. Did they take part in the agitation sponsored by funds from abroad?" Hiranya Dutta stated in front of the media persons while demanding the Union Minister not to ridicule the public sentiments of the State.

Attending the protest programme, AJYCP central committee assistant secretary Sourabh Das, Lakhimpur district general secretary Debojit Deka Baruah also became vocal against BJP's U-turn regarding the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
