DIBRUGARH: Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Dibrugarh district committee has come down heavily on Dibrugarh PWD and Water Resource Department for their 'utter failure' in construction of Rs 1 crore worth drainage system in the town.
In a statement issued to the press, AJYCP Dibrugarh district committee president Girin Chetia and general secretary Priyobrata Gohain held both the departments responsible for unprecedented rain-fed flood in the town because of their unplanned construction of drains and roads of the town. Alleging corruption in construction of drainage system, the organization held the Executive Engineer of PWD and Executive Engineer of the Water Resource Department accountable for the fiasco.
"Both officers' myopic attitude, lack of planning and lack of administrative control over the errant contractors have resulted in such unprecedented artificial flood ,which brought the normal life of citizens in 22 wards of the town to a standstill for consecutive six days," the press statement added. Both Chetia and Phukan, while emphasizing immediate remedial measures to be taken on a war-footing, also cautioned the people to be prepared for the next blitzkrieg of such kind of flood in the last phase of the ongoing monsoon.
"Nexus between corrupt contractors and senior officials of these two departments should be checked with iron hands otherwise the people of Dibrugarh have no other option except to bear such a situation next year also," the AJYCP statement added.
The Dibrugarh district committee AJYCP has fervently appealed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a resident of Dibrugarh also, to institute an inquiry on the specified issues and to take tough administrative action against these two errant officials.
