NAGAON: The district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), in association with its Uriagoan Anchalik body, staged a protest against the leasing out of land taken from indigenous people for construction of four-lane NH road by the National Highway Authority of India to private corporate owners. The protesters burnt the effigy of Union Transport and PWD Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday here at Nagaon Uriagoan bypass Chariali. Over thousands of members of the youth organization as well as other local people from Uriagoan area participated in the stir and also strongly criticized the initiative of the department concerned as well as the Union Government.

The Union Government as well as the department concerned have already finalized to provide several bighas of land taken from four local schools as well as other indigenous people of the area for construction of four-lane NH road by the National Highway Authority of India to some New Delhi-based businessman.

Significantly, some unemployed youths installed some temporary roadside outlets on the vacant lands on the bypass Chariali and are earning their livelihood. But, the Highway Authority of India, under special pursuance of Union Government, has allegedly decided to give those lands to the businessman and to clear the land by carrying out eviction through the district administration.

During the protest, the organization said that the stir would continue till the government withdraws its decision. The protesters demanded that the department concerned as well as the Union Government should allow the unemployed youths to do business on the vacant lands and that steps should be taken for beautification of the Uriagoan bypass Chariali.
