LAKHIMPUR: AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad) continues stir against the controversial Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP).

The organization on Thursday initiated State-wide dharna against the alleged atrocities committed by police in order to pacify the stir against the contentious Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) on Tuesday in Gogamukh. The AJYCP, led by president Rana Pratap Baruah and general secretary Polash Changmai, started comprehensive blockade from Tuesday against National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited, the constructing organization of the controversial mega river dam project. The agitational programme was initiated to block the NHPC vehicles carrying construction materials to the project site at Gerukamukh. On this occasion, around 3,000 protesters, including the activists of the AJYCP, and other anti-big river dam activist organizations along with public, staged demonstration in Gogamukh by the side of the Gogamukh-Gerukamukh connecting road on Tuesday. But police and security personnel on Tuesday evening allegedly vandalized the protest venue for violating COVID-19 protocol and drove the protesters away.

By staging the dharna, AJYCP strongly opposed the alleged police atrocities and State Government's 'forceful dominance' over the democratic protesters. By initiating the same agitation programme, the organization once again reiterated the demand to stop the construction of the contentious Subansiri Hydroelectric Project which is set up in a fragile hilly area of Gerukamukh under a highly seismic zone.

The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of AJYCP also staged the dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office with public participation. Prior to it, the activists of the organization, led by Lakhimpur district unit president Hiranya Dutta and general secretary Debojit Dekabaruah, took out a protest rally in North Lakhimpur town. During the rally, the protesters rent the air by shouting various slogans demanding the closure of the mega river dam project and opposing the alleged police atrocities. Taking part in the agitation programme, AJYCP central committee general secretary Sourabh Das criticized the BJP governments and the Centre and the State in strong terms regarding their U-turn in the issue.

Further, the organization submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, demanding him to make the Expert Committee Report on SLHP public as per resolution taken in the tripartite meeting held in New Delhi on December 11, 2014. The organization also demanded the Prime Minister to implement the report regarding the construction of the mega river dam project.

NALBARI: The Nalbari unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged dharna against alleged inhuman behaviour of Assam Police toward protesters of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), on Thursday in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

The protesters raised slogans against the alleged inhuman treatment of AJYCP activists at Gogamukh and Dhemaji while protesting against SLHP. The district committee submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of the district.

Partha Pratim Sarma, the district president, and Kaushik Barman, district secretary of AJYCP, led the dharna. They blocked the Barama Road in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office for a long time.
