AJYCP stages protest against hike in property tax in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has strongly opposed the State government’s move to hike various taxes under Urban Level Bodies on the basis of assessment and reassessment. The organization has termed the move on the part of the government to be “anti-public” and condemned it by expressing vehement resentment over the issue.

Notably, the State government started the process for self-assessment of property by holders and taxpayers in all urban areas last year. The government asked the property holders to submit their self-assessed report to their respective local urban bodies by September 10, 2022. The Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, issued a notification in this regard on June 28, 2022, stating that some of the municipal boards had assessed property tax way back in 1979, and the said assessment is still continuing without modification.

In pursuance of the Government Notification No.UDD(M)/136/2022/17, Dated 28/06/2022 and E-250185/1 Dt.06/02/2023, the holding tax of North Lakhimpur town has been re-assessed and the new re-assessed holding/property tax will be effected from April, 1, 2023 under North Lakhimpur town as per new rates. The new rates will remain valid for a period of 5 years i e till March 31, 2028. It has been observed that the calculation of new rates has irked the urban people.

Regarding the issue, the members of the Lakhimpur district unit of AJYCP staged a strong protest in front of the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) office on Monday. While initiating the demonstration, the organization alleged that the move to hike the taxes on the basis of assessment and reassessment had been taken without paying importance on holding public hearing and public claims and objection despite government notification issued in this regard.

By initiating the protest programme, Lakhimpur AJYCP submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur. Through the memorandum, the organization demanded the government to withdraw the move and the notification issued in this context.
