GUWAHATI : Akhil Gogoi, the independent MLA was suspended on 20th December from Assam Assembly. He was suspended on the grounds of "disrupting proceedings" by Assam Assembly speaker, Biswajit Daimary.
Gogoi wanted to raise a supplementary question related to harassment against women in the society, which was eventually interrupted and disallowed by the Speaker. Speaker Biswajit Daimary suggested Akhil Gogoi to rather put forward his question then getting entangled in lectures, and suspended him from the Assembly.
In the month of September, the MLA was suspended from the Assembly during question hour. The Sibsagar legislature was interrupted by Speaker Biswajit Daimary, while wanting to ask a question related to Education Department.
Later the MLA claimed that he was restrained from speaking on which the speaker got offended and directed his suspension. The speaker further asserted that, andolan (protests) has its own set of rules and cannot be carried out inside the House. Two Marshals later took Akhil Gogoi outside the Assembly.
Gogoi has quite a history when it comes to suspension from the House. In another episode this year, during a budget session, Akhil Gogoi repeatedly interrupted Governor Jagdish Mukhi for which he was dragged out of the Assembly House. Gogoi was asked to leave the House by the Speaker. He refused to leave and displayed a placard on which was taken out of the place by force.
Mr. Gogoi raised issue of employment to 1 lakh youth of the state as assured by the BJP government. The other issues raised by the MLA were related to paddy procurement from farmers, land rights and corruption on water supply scheme.
Akhil Gogoi was detained in December 2019, under the Unlawful Activities Act for initiating protest against CAA. He was also accused of having some sort of connection with Maoists. However, Gogoi won seat in Assembly polls while he was under police custody.
