GUWAHATI: In a major step towards the unification of the opposition to counter-fight the Saffron brigade in the upcoming elections, Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi said that he wants West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been trying to form an Opposition alliance against the BJP, as the next Prime Minister of the country.

Speaking before the media today, Gogoi added, "We are trying to build a regional federation. The federalism in the country is in crisis today."

Further extending his support to the Trinamool Congress supremo, Gogoi further said that he will discuss the matter with Chief Minister Banerjee after three months. The Independent MLA is of the view that all the Opposition parties must unite if they want to defeat the saffron brigade in the 2024 Lok Sabha and 2026 Assam assembly elections.

Interestingly, he further said that the TMC leadership including Banerjee has extended the party's Assam state unit president portfolio to him. "Of late, I went to Kolkata and met Mamata Banerjee twice. She urged me to become the Assam state unit president of her party. We are now discussing the matter and soon take a final decision on it."

Gogoi also commented on election strategist Prashant Kishore who has been learned to help the Congress in the 2024 general elections that the latter's decision will help the Opposition to a large extent.

Gogoi further added that, "The TMC wants me to become the president of its Assam unit. We have not given any commitment, but our party is constantly trying to be part of an Opposition front against the BJP for future elections."

It may be mentioned that, the TMC has been eyeing Tripura where Assembly elections would be held in 2023. The party is also keen on making a mark in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Assam.
