SIVASAGAR: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) staged a three-hour sit-in in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Sivasagar demanding ST status to the Koch Rajbongshi community on Wednesday.

Making allegations that various political parties which formed government in the past, have cheated the Koch Rajbongshi community in the name of tribalization, the protesters said, "The then Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal formed a committee headed by then senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the first term of the BJP government. Later, the then minister and present Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma referred to the fact that ninety per cent of the work of granting tribal status to the Koch Rajbongshi community had already been done. But later, the Union Tribal Affairs Minister announced that his department had not received any draft from the Assam Government in this regard."

The AKRSU expressed anger that the BJP government in Assam had been cheating the Koch Rajbongshi community for years. The AKRSU also threatened to launch a protest programme at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in July with 1,000 people to demand ST status.
