LAKHIMPUR: The alarming spike of COVID-19 patients has turned into an issue of grave concern in Lakhimpur district. The number of people affected by the virus has been increasing in the district by leaps and bounds day after day. Careless attitude of people towards safety measures is considered to be the main reason for the widespread contagion of the pandemic. Most of the people in the district have shown negligence in using face masks and to maintain social distancing in public places. As a result of such carelessness of a section of people, the number of COVID-19 cases in the district crossed the mark of 5,000 on Friday. On the other hand, the total cases crossed the mark of 5,500 on Tuesday. A total of 27 people of the district have lost their life due to COVID-19 infection

A total of 123 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the district on Tuesday. Of them, 114 patients were found positive for coronavirus infection through Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) while remaining 9 patients were detected as per real time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR) Test result. Notably, a total of 447 patients were detected in the district in the last three days. Out of them, 145 patients were found positive on Saturday, 135 on Sunday while 167 patients were detected on Monday.

With these newly-detected patients, the number of total COVID-19 cases spiked to 5,590 on Tuesday. Out of them, 3,969 patients have been discharged while 1,621 are active cases. They are under treatment at District COVID Hospital at Telahi Model Hospital (86), Laluk COVID Care Centre (CCC) at Laluk Model Hospital (50), Narayanpur CCC at Narayanpur Model Hospital (50), Narayanpur Poly-technique CCC (192), Boginadi CCC at Boginadi Model Hospital (50), Naoboicha College CCC (180) and North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital (80) while the remaining patients are under home isolation.

Several healthcare employees and workers, including doctors, who are fighting relentlessly against the pandemic, have been infected by the coronavirus. Moreover, several journalists of the district have also been infected by the dreaded virus of late.

In view of alarming spike of COVID-19 patients in the district, the Lakhimpur District Health Society will organize an awareness rally on Wednesday in North Lakhimpur town in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner.
