LAKHIMPUR: All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) has expressed strong reaction over the derecognition of Guwahati Medical College, Assam Medical College and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College of Assam by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Notably, the National Medical Commission (NMC), marking a significant step, recently revoked 40 medical institutions throughout the country, including the three medical colleges of the State. This choice was made after recent inspections and it revealed that these institutions did not adhere to the NMC’s criteria. Report says that over the past two months, almost 40 medical institutions have lost their accreditation due to their failure to adhere to the requirements imposed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

In connection with this issue, AASAA central committee president Godwin Hemrom, general secretary Amarjyoti Surin in a press release said, “All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), is deeply shocked and concerned about the de-recognition of noted Medical College and Hospitals of Assam, viz—Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), located in the heart of Guwahati city, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, Borpeta, by National Medical Commission (NMC)”.

Criticizing the Government of Assam in the same press release, the AASAA president and the general secretary further said, “The present government and many times the opposition also speak very highly about the performances of the ruling State Government. We have all seen how the government is functioning through ‘PR Stunts’. Only building of structures doesn’t offer service; for that full infrastructure and quality human resources, quality services and masterfully handling them, are also of equally importance. The Adivasi people along with other communities flock to GMCH, AMCH and the Medical College and Hospital of Borpeta for better medical facilities and treatment and which is also a vision for the medical aspiring students of the State. So how can the government play with the lives of billions? The State woke up with such a devastating news in health sector that major population of Assam is now under the threat of being deprived of quality health care services as determined by the National Medical Commission (NMC).”

Relating to the issue, the organization has also highlighted the poor condition of many tea garden hospitals and demanded quality infrastructure and better health services. “There are many hospitals without doctors, proper medicines, treatment facility and without ambulances”, the press release added. AASAA has demanded the State government to pay special attention towards the health of the Adivasi, Tea Garden workers. The organization has further demanded immediate action with regard to doing the needful, so that the Medical College and Hospitals can get their recognition and quality health care for the citizens of Assam is ensured.
