BONGAIGAON: The All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a protest on Tuesday at Birjhora Tea State Mazdoor Club of Bongaigaon in support of various demands.
The demands included ST categorization of the Adivasi community, increasing minimum payment of tea workers, providing high-level medical facilities to tea workers etc.
Amrut Jojo, president of Bongaigaon district AASAA, said, "Though Droupadi Murmu, an Adivasi woman, occupies the highest post in our country, i.e. the President of India, the Adivasi community remains in the same condition since Independence. Our people do not have access to good healthcare and education. Till today, the minimum payment of a tea garden worker is Rs 205 per day. Can a family survive in this amount? Price of one litre of mustard oil is more than our daily income. This is the height of exploitation. We have been agitating since a long time for increasing this minimum pay but the government is silent. We demand that the minimum wage per day of a worker should be Rs 510 or we will launch a massive democratic agitation."
