JORHAT: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Jorhat unit on Wednesday came down hard on the Health department for the deplorable condition of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

Sankalpa Gogoi and Arjunmoni Bhuyan, president and general secretary respectively of the Jorhat unit of AASU, stated that that patients at JMCH suffered immensely due to a non- functional neurosurgery department, defunct MRI machine, and only one semi-functional ultrasound machine.

The AASU unit, on the 13th foundation day of JMCH, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the DC's office, demanding revival of JMCH and making the Neurosurgery and Radiology units fully functional.

A senior official of JMCH admitted that the Neurosurgery department equipped with state-of-the-art machinery had closed down as two neurosurgeons had resigned in February this year and the third had gone for higher studies. "We are in talks with the government to find out whether a neurosurgeon can be appointed again," he said.

The official further said that the Radiology department was semi functional as the CT Scan machines, which were more than 11 years old, were both defunct and were sometimes repaired and used. Likewise, he said, the two sonograph machines which were also very old, were non-functional and another, which was six years old, was sometimes repaired and used on and off. He also said that the MRI machine was not working. He added that the Director of Medical Education had assured that two sonograph machines would be procured and given to the hospital soon and that order had been placed for one sonograph machine by the JMCH from its own funds.
