DIBRUGARH: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) members in Dibrugarh staged a 10-hour long hunger strike in protest against the State Government’s decision to implement English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government-run schools from Class 6 onwards.

Recently, the AASU had announced a month-long agitation across the State starting from May 28 over the decision of implementing English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government-run schools from class 6. It has planned a mass protest programme in Guwahati on June 6.

Additionally, public awareness programmes will be conducted by the AASU in every district from June 8 to June 14. Similarly, AASU will organize protests in every district headquarters on June 15 followed by bicycle processions in each subdivision on June 24.

“AASU members across the State are observing a hunger strike in protest against the decision to implement English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government-run schools from Class 6 onwards. We have been opposing it since it was announced last year and it won’t be accepted,” an AASU leader said.

NAHARKATIA: On the call of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to stage a 10-hour hunger strike against the Assam Government’s decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English medium from Class VI onwards, a protest was staged near the office of Naharkatia Regional Students’ Union and near the Namrup Regional Students’ Union office from 6 am on Wednesday by Naharkatia and Namrup AASU. Tridip Saikia, president of Naharkatia Regional Students’ Union, and Ashim Jyoti Phukan, president of Namrup Regional Students’ Union, urged the government to immediately cancel the anti-mother tongue decision, or else it would be forced to take up more aggressive movements than this. At today’s hunger strike, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad Naharkatia and Namrup regional as well as various organizations, retired teachers and the general public cooperated.

TINSUKIA: As a part of the month-long agitation programme, the Tinsukia Regional Students’ Union (TRSU) observed a 10-hour hunger strike on Wednesday to protest against the government’s decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English from Standard VI onwards and publication of these textbooks in English. The 12 anchalik committees of the Tinsukia district, namely Tinsukia, Panitola, Makum, Doomdooma, Dangori, Phollobari, Kakopathar, Sadiya, Digboi, Margherita, Bordumsa and Pangeree participated in the programme.

In a press release, general secretary TDSU Samarjyoti Gohain stated that gagging of mother tongue in political interest will not be accepted. Despite objections from student bodies, the government went ahead with the policy which led to a bleak crisis in the mother tongue. He vehemently condemned the anti-mother tongue policy of the government and demanded immediate roll back of the policy.
