JORHAT: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has threatened to resort to a stir if the NF Railways does not decrease demurrage charges, which have been sharply increased from Rs 150 per hour to Rs 600, here.

Apprehending a commensurate increase in prices of essential commodities, the AASU in a memorandum submitted to the NF Railways, Tinsukia division, through the Deputy Commissioner on Thursday, demanded immediate revocation of the increase.

AASU stated in the memorandum that the goods yard at Jorhat was in a deplorable condition and merchants could offload commodities only in daylight hours. AASU alleged that the goods yard at JPR did not have electricity and water and merchants had to unload commodities after the break of dawn as it was not possible to do so in candlelight.

AASU further demanded that the Railways made arrangements to provide electric lights and water in the goods yard so that merchants did not have to keep the goods for extra hours in the railway containers and pay extra demurrage.
