All Assam Unemployed Association demands compensation for pest-affected farmers

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA) has demanded the Government of Assam to compensate the farmers whose crops have been affected by pests. In this connection, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Agriculture Minister through the District Commissioner of Lakhimpur.

A large portion of the paddy fields under different places of Lakhimpur district has been attacked by pests, causing massive problems for the local farmers during this harvesting season. It has triggered severe tension among the farmers. According to the affected farmers, the pests remain in hiding during the day and after sunset they spread across the plants and cause massive damage to the crop through the night. The affected farmers said that they had used several pesticides, but failed to control these pests, owing to which paddy crops in thousands of bighas of land had been destroyed. In Lakhimpur, the pests started to attack the paddy plants, when they started to grow seeds. The infestation is still going on and under the attack of the pests, the rice crops where the grains has just started to mature are now being destroyed.

Under such situation, the Lakhimpur district unit of AAUA, through the memorandum, signed by president Binod Das and general secretary Bhupen Sonowal urged the Agriculture Minister to initiate steps to identify the affected farmers of Lakhimpur district and release one time compensation to them.
