KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA) on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise of Prof (Dr) Biswajit Basumatary, Dean of Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Tepesia, Sonapur, Guwahati at 11.40 pm on October 3.

The president of the ABSU Dipen Boro said the Bodos had lost a great personality. He said late Basumatary hailing from Manikpur of Karbi Anglong had attended many state and national level seminar and workshops organized by the union and he was a great inspiration among the youths especially in the field of sports. Basumatary assured to work for the development of various sports with the ABSU to tab the talents; he said adding that he was always a straight thinker and true worker.

Boro said Basumatary actively participated in the Rio Olympic in 2016 and Tokyo Olympic in 2020 as a subject expert from India and he was the Dean of the LNIPE till his death. Born on April 1, 1964, Basumatary obtained his PhD from Sheffield University, United Kingdom. He died due to COVID-19 at the age of 57 years.

On the other hand, the general secretary of the BIGA Guno Shankar Wary and president of Kokrajhar district BIGA Prasanta Brahma also expressed deep shock over his death. They said Basumatary worked towards the protection and promotion of Bodo traditional games and decided to promote the indigenous Khomlainai (Traditional wrestling) in international arena.
