TINSUKIA: With Railway workers across the country opposing the BJP’s anti-labour policies, including National Pension System (NPS), the 99th annual session of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) to be held at Mumbai’s Pearl City on November 8 and November 9 will be a litmus test for the ruling party ahead of the 2024 general elections as massive agitation will be launched in January.

In a statement, NFR Mazdoor Union (NFRMU) central assistant general secretary Pulak Gogoi said that the Pearl City session of the railway workers would be significant in many ways. The AIRF has always strongly opposed anti-labour and anti-people policies like the privatization of industries, monetization pipelines, price hike etc. There are 13,12,039 vacancies in Indian Railways against a total of 14,74,271 non-gazetted posts, said Gogoi. The AIRF has been demanding the cancellation of the National Pension System (NPS) and the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

The BJP government had already been warned during the last Puri convention that the party which restores OPS will remain in power at the Centre, the statement added. The session will be attended by leaders of 17 divisions of Indian Railways, including NFRMU, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and others.
