KOKRAJHAR: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) on Thursday warned that it will resume the democratic movement if the government fails to solve their demands as early as possible.

Talking to mediapersons at Kokrajhar, the president of the AKRSU, Balaram Barma said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assured to solve the problems of the Koch Rajbongshis, including ST status to the community within six months if they come to power, but nothing has been initiated by the government. He reiterated that the successive governments in Assam had been cheating the community for over the last three decades. He also said the BJP-led State government had been playing politics on the issue of ST categorization.

Barman said the State government claimed it would send the proposal of enlisting Koch Rajbongshis in ST category to the Government of India very shortly and when they approached the Centre, it used to deny receiving the proposal from the State government, which proves that the State government had been playing politics over it.

The president of AKRSU warned that they would stage a sit-in at Dispur Last Gate on December 22 demanding immediate solution of their problems. The union also said that they will observe the 21st national martyrs' day at Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on January 7 next year to be organized jointly by the central committee and Kokrajhar district committee of the union.
