DIBRUGARH: Along with the rest of the world, All Souls Day was observed by the Christian community here on Thursday. The Dibrugarh Inter Church Forum (DICEF), a conglomeration of several Christian groups held a prayer service at the catholic cemetery at Paltan Bazar led by Bishop Albert Hemrom who prayed for all the departed souls and blessed the graves while the parishioners prayed for their departed relatives and loved ones by lighting candles.
Several priests and nuns took part in the prayer service. The All Souls Day is observed every year on November 2 as devotees remember the departed by decorating their graves and chanting special prayers for their souls. The graves are specially blessed by priests while mass and prayers are observed.
It is a solemn and significant observance in the liturgical calendar of the Christian faith. Many Christian denominations within the Roman Catholic communion pray on this day for all the faithful who have died, those baptised Christians who are said to be in purgatory, having died with the penalty of lesser sins.
This day is dedicated to remember and pray for the souls of the departed, particularly those in purgatory, who are believed to be on their way to heaven but in need of purification.
