GUWAHATI:

Milk, like other essential commodities, has seen a price increase amid continuing demonstrations over rising prices in the state.

From July 1, the Greater Guwahati Dairy Farmers Association raised the price of milk by Rs 3 per litre. The milk price has risen as a result of price increases by milk producers. Previously, a litre of milk could be purchased for Rs. 48 and sold for Rs. 51 per litre in wholesale and Rs. 53 per litre in retail, but now a litre of milk will be purchased for Rs. 51 and sold for Rs. 54 per litre in wholesale and Rs. 56 per litre in retail.

Guwahati's milk industry which employs 520 people sells about one lakh sixty litres of milk everyday. The rise in the cost of milk may also result in price hike of other milk products and sweets.

Due to the price hike that the state has been witnessing, the Assam Congress party has led series of protests. On Wednesday, Assam's Indian National Congress Party protested at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, reportedly against price hike.

The APCC has banded together and asked the government to halt the price hike of all basic items today and work towards bringing price hike under control so as the common people don't have to bear the brunt of it.

In the midst of the pandemic which has brought turmoil into the lives of people in all fronts, the Assam Pradesh Assam Pradesh Congress Party claimed that the massive price hike on essential commodities have severely affected the people of Assam leading them through hardships and turning their lives upside down. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has also urged that the BJP led state administration take immediate action counter the massive price hike in mostly all the commodities in Assam.

Earlier on Monday, the opposition parties boycotted opening day of the Assam Assembly's Budget Session by walking out of the assembly hall after Speaker Biswajit Daimary refused to allow debate on the subject of rising fuel and other basic commodity prices.
