TINSUKIA: The people of Amarpur, the remotest riverine island in Sadiya, have accused the civil administration for the boat mishap on Wednesday at River Dibang.

Though all 36 passengers on board were safe after the motor boat they were travelling in hit a floating log, three four-wheelers and 2 two-wheelers sank along with the boat. The SDRF team could retrieve one four-wheeler from the turbulent river bed on Thursday.

The local people alleged that the Inland Water Transport Department (IWT) which is supposed to make ferry service safe and hassle-free, never bothered about the service and left it to lessees and mahaldars who run the business as per their whims. Despite several mishaps in recent times, the rescue team reached late, which was primarily due to the bad condition of the road from Chapakhowa to the river ghat and the civil administration never learnt from past incidents, they lamented.
