SILCHAR: Despite repeated appeals from various quarters, tension did not seem to die down in Silchar as a vehicle carrying a family, returning to home from Silchar Medical College Hospital was attacked on Friday night at E&D Colony area. An elderly lady Ayesha Sultana and her minor grand son Mushafiq Chowdhury sustained injuries. A group of miscreants chanting ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogan started pelting stones at the vehicle. The late night incident whipped up tension that engulfed Silchar following the incidents of cow slaughtering during the Bakri Eid on Thursday. Police had detained one Azhar Majumder, reportedly a drug addict, for posting objectionable post in his Facebook account targeting the Kaibartya (Bengali fishermen) community.

In this backdrop, Cachar district administration and police authorities launched ‘Operation Sampriti’, an initiative to restore normalcy as well as communal harmony on Saturday. Earlier on Friday evening Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha convened a peace meeting in his conference hall where he categorically underlined that Cow Protection Act had to be followed in strictest possible way.

On Saturday, the district administration initiated extensive mobile announcements in sensitive areas of Silchar town appealing people not to pay any heed to any rumours and maintain peace and harmony. The announcement further stated that if anyone was found indulging in fresh violence and spreading hatred messages against any community on social media, strict action would be taken. DC Jha made an appeal to the people not to take the law in their hands. The administration is always there for the people, if anyone receives any threat or gets abused it should be brought immediately to the notice of the nearest police outpost.

SP Nomal Mahatta also stated that police administration had been keeping a close watch on the recent incidents. Police had already apprehended the person who was involved in disturbing communal harmony of the district.
