JORHAT: An amount of Rs 7 lakh was looted from a customer of a restaurant who went to take lunch after withdrawing the amount from bank within the heart of Jorhat city on the busy Mitha Pukhuri road at around 1.10 pm, informed police sources here.

In a dramatic manner an amount of Rs 7 lakh was stolen, which was kept in a bag by a PWD contractor Jewel Borah of Titabor Rangajan, who after withdrawing the amount from the SBI main branch took his seat in the restaurant to have lunch along with two other business partner. All three after finishing their lunch went off to wash their hands and after coming back they found that the carry bag along with mobile sets was missing. Though all three made hue and cry and charged restaurant authority including waiters, nothing could be found, said the police.

The contractor Jewel Bora later lodged an FIR at Jorhat Police Station and mentioned about a person taking lunch at front table who was also found missing. The police is conjecturing that the alleged miscreants who have committed the crime might have followed the contractor from the bank. Moreover, police have collected CCTV footage to book the miscreants, said the incharge of Jorhat Police Station Ranjit Chetia. Looting in broad day light in busy areas within the city of Jorhat is on the rise.
