Numaligarh: Despite the Sonowal Government’s attempt to pacify the growing anti-CAA sentiments by announcing numerous schemes for the people of the State, it seems that the protests are growing stronger with each passing day. On Thursday, the teachers, employees, students, and ex-students of Morangi College (Degree) staged a sit-in demanding the termination of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. A large number of students, ex-students and teachers, employees of the college staged a dharna near NH-39 at Purabangla Tiniali.
The protest started with a march from the college premises and ended with a six-hour-long sit-in. The protesters raised slogans against the Central government and the State government for passing the act. The protesters also stated that the students, teachers, employees community of the college will never give recognition to the CAA. The protesters also criticized the government’s warning to all its employees against using social media as it has been widely used to spread anti-CAA messages. The Elementary Education department recently issued a letter warning permanent as well as contractual employees against indulging in political activities.
On the other hand, Bir Lachit Sena, the Golaghat unit also staged a strong protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 near the adjoining junction point of NH-37 & NH-39 at Numaligarh Tiniali on Friday. The protesters protested demanding the government for immediate termination of the Act. The protesters also demanded the immediate release of Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha. One of the protesters said, “The BJP is now holding peace rallies after killing 5 innocent Assamese youth. We will not tolerate any form of dominance from the government on the protesters. We will continue to fight against this destructive Act in a united, peaceful and democratic way. We also warn the Government to release our leader Shrinkhal Chaliha along with all the arrested protesters, or the government will have to bear the consequences of being anti-people in the coming elections.”
