Guwahati: Assam is all set to witness the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (Anti-CAA) protests from December 24 to 31. The Chatra Mukti Sangra Samiti (CMSS), the Students' wing of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), had said that it will observe the Anti-CAA week from December 24 to 31.
The CMSS had also informed that it will organise mass conventions in protest against the contentious CAA at Dhemaji, Golaghat and Tinsukia in Assam.
Meanwhile, several other organisations in Assam have launched Anti-CAA protests in different parts of the State. Students' fraternity-led by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has warned the Government not to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
On December 11, as many as 18 organisations in Assam, including AASU, KMSS, Assam Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Lachit Sena along with students and other youth organisations had re-launched Anti-CAA protests across the State demanding the repeal of the controversial legislation.
These organisations have also demanded for the immediate release of the KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested last year around the same time and since then have been lodged in jail.
It was December 11 last year that the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in the Parliament.
To boost the protest of the CMSS, Dibrugarh University Students' Union General Secretary- Rahul Chetri and B Barooah College Students' Union General Secretary- Subrajit Baruah had joined the CMSS.
However, while responding to a question seeking updates on the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) at a press conference in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said, "The rules for the CAA are yet to be framed. Due to coronavirus, such a massive exercise cannot be carried out. We will consider it once vaccination starts and when the infection chain breaks."
When reminded about his often-quoted remark "Aap chronology samajh lijiye" explaining the chronology in which the CAA and NRC will be implemented, Minister Shah said that the chronology had changed.
"Let the first in the chronology (vaccination) complete," he said.
The Union Minister is going to visit Assam on December 26. He is about to attend a few governments and party programmes during his visit.
The visit is a significant one following the formation of the new Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) by the coalition of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), United People Party Liberal (UPPL), and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP).
Amit Shah also congratulated BJP's new ally, UPPL and their victory in the BTC elections.
