Anup Chetia demands Constitutional safeguard to Indigenous People of Assam

Under Clause 6 of the historic 1985 Assam Accord, indigenous Forum Assam- a joint platform of over 30 ethnic organizations on 1st November 2019 demands constitutional safeguards to genuine indigenous people of the state.

As per reports, Anup Chetia said that a list of 87 indigenous communities of Brahmaputra Valley and 19 of the Barak Valley for constitutional safeguard before the High-Level Committee for Implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in its public hearing held in Guwahati.

“The existence of the indigenous people of the state is on the verge of extinction. Hence, to protect the rights of the indigenous people, we want constitutional safeguard under clause 6 of the Accord,” said the General Secretary of the pro-talk United Liberation Front of Asom.

Clause VI of the Accord signed between the government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement.

However, it deals with constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards for Assamese people.

The 14-member committee, chaired by Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma representing various ethnic communities, political parties, and civilians on the implementation of Clause 6.
