GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee APCC President Ripun Bora filed his nominations from the Gohpur constituency today.

A sea of people greeted Bora as he filed his nominations ahead of the Assam Assembly Elections slated to be held from March 27. He was accompanied by Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi and former State minister Rakibul Hussain.

"Grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love & support of people who joined me as I filed my nominations from Gohpur LAC, alongside Sh. Gaurav Gogoi& Sh. Rakibul Hussain. Such warmth strengthens my resolve of service to people!" Bora tweeted.

Ripun Bora will contest the Gohpur assembly seat where his wife Monica Bora was defeated by the BJP candidate by nearly 30,000 votes.

The last date for submission of nomination papers by candidates is March 9. The elections to the 126 assembly constituencies will be held in three phases- March 27, April 1 and April 6. The counting will take place on May 2.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed at March 12.

The Congress has announced a list of 43 candidates for the Assam Assembly polls. It needs to be mentioned here that the grand old party has inducted 20 fresh faces in the list of candidates and six sitting MLAs including Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia in Nazira.

In an effort to give a tough fight to the ruling BJP Government the Congress has stepped up and forged an alliance with various other parties, including left parties, AIUDF, and Anchalik Gana Morcha. The party is further backed by its old ally Bodoland People's Front BPF. The Congress received a boost when state hill areas development minister Sum Ronghang joined the party on Sunday. He was denied ticket from the BJP to contest from Diphu.

Meanwhile, the party has launched the 'Axom Bachao Ahok' (Let's Save Assam) campaign to understand the issues and problems of the common people and "save Assam from being destroyed by the BJP".
