BARPETA ROAD: An incident of firing took place in the Brapeta Road locality of the state creating a condition of fear in the region.
The incident reportedly took place at the State Bank of India’s (SBI) customer service point (CSP) located in the Shakti Nagar locality near the vegetable market of the town. Two miscreants came in the guise of customers to the customer service point and opened fire inside same. They fired several rounds in a bid to loot the centre.
The local people were able to apprehend one miscreant. He was also beaten up by the public and was later admitted to a hospital. He was identified as one Fazal Ali belonging to the Adabari village of Hajo in the Kamrup district. The other miscreant was able to flee after firing a few rounds.
Fazal Ali was admited to the First Referal Unit in Barpeta Road but was later referred to the Barpeta Medical College and Hospital for better medical care.
Meanwhile, the incident triggered intense fear in the entire Barpeta Road. The proprietor of the centre Shah Alam mentioned that the incident took place when he and his employees were about to close business for the day. He mentioned that the miscreants were after the approximate Rs 3 lakh that was in the centre.
Barpeta Road Police has started an investigation regarding the incident.
A few days back, an incident of moral policing was reported when a group of people harassed two young women near the bridge of the Beki river on National Highway 31 in Barpeta Road of Assam. The two women were accused of carrying out alleged immoral acts at a dhaba located nearby and were attacked by the mob as a result. Reports on the incident said the women were dragged out of the dhaba, verbally abused and even beaten by the public for carrying out such alleged immoral activities in the dhaba. The mob then went on a rampage inside the dhaba and ransacked the eatery. A customer was also reportedly attacked and was injured in the process.
