TINSUKIA: The soldiers for the 18th Garwal Regiment arrested a National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Reformation (NSCN-R) tax collector from the Maloupahar locality of Ledo during an operation in the region. He was identified as one Jethu Hakhun.

Acting on intelligence reports, soldiers of the 18th Garwal Regiment of the Indian Army carried out an operation in Maloupahar. The operation led to the capture of one tax collector who was known to carry out extortion in the Margherita subdivision of Assam and the bordering region of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. A pistol with three live rounds and a mobile phone were recovered from the captured member of the insurgent outfit. He was later handed over to the police to carry on with the investigation.

In a previous operation, Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh apprehended a hardcore insurgent of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Reformation (NSCN-R) during a joint operation. The rebel, identified as Captain Khilpong Jugli (47), a self-styled town commander of the outfit, was arrested from the Nadipar area of Changlang district during a joint operation on Sunday, Changlang Superintendent of Police (SP) Mihin Gambo said.

The joint team of district police and the 149th battalion of the CRPF, under the supervision of SP, apprehended the militant, who is a resident of Old Shallang village in the district. He was associated with the NSCN-K for a long time before he joined the NSCN-R in 2019, the SP said, adding that the arrested rebel was also wanted in multiple criminal cases in the district.

Members of the banned insurgent outfit National Socialist Council of Nagaland are known to extort local businessmen in the Assam- Nagaland-Arunachal Pradesh border region. With the capture of a tax collector and a town commander of the outfit within a few days, the security forces have brought a sigh of relief to the local people.
