GOLAGHAT: To provide pure drinking water to the people of this country the Central government has taken a Mega Project but it is yet to be active. Here in the State of Assam, majority of the population is still getting deprived of pure drinking water. Presently Public Health Engineering Department, Municipal Boards, Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board are providing drinking water to the people in the State. But all these are covering only 50 to 55 per cent of the total population. The improper work plan of the PHE Department leads the majority of the population to drink impure water which resulted spreading several diseases . In Golaghat district around 85,000 families are deprived of getting pure drinking water as there is no proper work plan of the PHE Department in the district. The ground water in Golaghat has huge quantity of arsenic and iron. But the concerned authorities have not taken adequate measures to remove such dangerous elements and provide pure drinking water to the people.

The PHE department has been able to cover only 500 villages out of 1,125 villages in the district. The state government has taken two mega projects to provide arsenic-free water to the people in the year 2014. But till the time only 55 per cent of one project has completed and the rest needs another three to four months to be completed. One project was set up at Adharsatra area under Khumtai LAC and the other one is at a place under Kakodunga Development Block. People of both rural and urban areas in Golaghat still have to drink impure water for which they have to suffer from several diseases.
