DHUPDHARA: The All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU), All Rabha Women Council (ARWC) and Sixth Schedule Demand Committee (SSDC) took out a protest rally for around 50 kilometres, where the Kamrup District Committee started from Kenduguri village, Boko to Dhupdhara through National Highway 17 (22 km) and Goalpara District Committee started from Dudhnai to Dhupdhara through National Highway 17 (28 km), on Wednesday.

ARSU and other sister organizations demanded inclusion of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Their other demands are to transfer the power and functions to the RHAC as mentioned in the Rabha Accord and create a development council for the Rabha people residing outside the RHAC area.

“We have the long-pending demand to include RHAC areas in the Sixth Schedule. We have started a padyatra and we hope the government will fulfil our demands soon,” said Nripen Khanda, president of ARSU. “If we don’t get any fruitful results from the government, we will project our own candidates in the Lok Sabha election and the assembly and panchayat elections,” added Khanda.

More than 5,000 people from Rabha, Bengali and Gorkha communities and ARSU, ARWS and SSDC members gathered at Dhupdhara for the protest rally. Another protest will be held at Dudhnai on April 9 and in Boko on April 3.
