LAKHIMPUR: The citizens of North Lakhimpur town had to suffer a lot on Monday due to the alleged imprudent and unmoved attitude on the part of North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) as well as the Lakhimpur district administration with regard to rendering developmental schemes with proper plan and estimate in the urban area to provide relief to the civic citizens from artificial flood.

Flood Generation By Gabharu, Kakoi River in Lakhimpur Assam

Due to heavy downpour, which incessantly continued from 8 pm of Sunday night till 11 am of Monday morning, almost the whole North Lakhimpur town was plunged in logging water on Monday. Amid the adverse situation caused by the second wave of the COVID-19 contagion, the artificial flood pushed the people of the town to a critical condition which crippled their normal life. The logging water inundated Ward No 1, Ward No. 6, Ward No. 8, Ward No. 9, Ward No. 11, Ward No. 12, Ward No. 13, Ward No 14 under the town submerging ASTC office area, Milan Nagar, Gopi Nagar Colony, Khelmati-North Lakhimpur Connecting Road, Lakhimpur Girls' Higher Secondary School Road, number of residential houses and by-lanes.

The non-construction of the drainage system in the town to discharge the rain water following effective plan and scientific methods, the non-cleaning of the same in proper time are considered to be the root causes of the inundation. Notably, the NLMB was under flux for almost three years due to conflict among a section of the Board members, including the then Chief Executive Officer of the civic body, which halted the implementation of developmental schemes.
