LAKHIMPUR: ASHA workers burnt the effigy of State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog in Lakhimpur district on Thursday, while strongly reacting to a statement made by her in the Legislative Assembly. While tabulating the State Budget on March 17, she allegedly stated that the Anganwadi workers had played pivotal role in the reduction of the rate of death of pregnant mothers and new born children in the State by crediting the Anganwadi workers.
By initiating the protest programme, the ASHA workers of the district strongly opposed the Finance Minister's statement. Leading the protest programme, All Assam ASHA Workers' Union Lakhimpur district unit president Lily Kalita and secretary Dipali Saikia said that the Finance Minister gave false information in the Legislative Assembly. By staging the same protest programme, the organization demanded the State Government to regularize the jobs of ASHA workers and to manage pension scheme for the retired ASHA workers.
The organization staged the protest in front of the office of the Joint Director, District Health Services, Lakhimpur, located in North Lakhimpur town. The ASHA workers of Dhakuakhana subdivision also staged the same protest in Dhakuakhana town.
