DIBRUGARH: Responding to the central committee's call, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district units of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) observed a day-long sit-in at Chowkidinghi Playground and in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office, Tinsukia respectively demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958.
The AJYCP leaders who took part in the agitation later stated that the army engaged in the Northeast to contain terrorism and other forms of anti-national activities, has been misusing the draconian law presently in force in the entire north-eastern region in the name of controlling terrorism. They recalled those black days when in the name of bringing ULFA militants' activities under control, the army had tortured innocent villagers.
"Similar incidents had rocked the entire nation when the Army killed 16 innocent people at Mon in Nagaland recently by misusing the prevailing AFSPA in the Northeast," the leaders alleged. AJYCP of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district chapters, to support their demand of immediate withdrawal of AFSPA from the entire Northeast, submitted memoranda to the President of India through Deputy Commissioners of both districts, respectively.
