LAKHIMPUR: Hundreds of activists of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad on Saturday rocked the Gerukamukh initiating massive protest against Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) and its constructing organization NHPC. AJYCP demonstrated the protest against the contentious mega river dam project following the overflown water of the catchment area of the SLHP, rolling down over the main dam of the project with three meter height for three days, hit almost hundred revenue villages in the downstream area of the Subansiri River, under five Revenue Circles of Lakhimpur district.
Notably, a delegation of AJYCP, led by State General Secretary Polash Changmai, arrived at Gerukamukh in order to visit the project site. But the SLHP authority did not allow the delegation to enter the project site. The security personnel from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Assam Police prevented the delegation and mediapersons from going inside the site at the entry gate. Following this, a tensed situation arose at the entrance gate of SLHP with confrontation between AJYCP activists and the security personnel. Later the activists of the organization under Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NHPC expressing vehement resentment regarding the issue.
Polash Changmai reiterated that the AJYCP would not allow to commission the mega river dam project which seems to be a water bomb for the people living in the downstream area of the Subansiri River covering Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Majuli and Biswanath districts of North Assam. The Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units of the organization declared that protest against controversial SLHP would be intensified in the upcoming days.
