LAKHIMPUR: The central committee of Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) has once again urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention in order to settle the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border dispute. In this connection, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister requesting his steps at the earliest.

Through the memorandum, the organization at first hailed the Chief Minister for signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Arunanchal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu in New Delhi in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve the long-pending border tension between the two states.

Through the same memorandum, the AYM expressed its concern too over the ceaseless aggression on the part of the people from Arunachal Pradesh with regard to encroaching upon Assam’s land even after the inking of the MoU.

“At present, there is apprehension that the MoU will fail to meet its aims and objectives due to unabated encroachment of Arunachali people upon Assam’s land in the Lakhimpur district. Even after the inking of the MoU, a section of aggressive people from Arunachal Pradesh has caused deforestation and tension in the Kakoi and Ranga Reserve Forests of Assam. Moreover, fencing pillars of afforestation project have been pulled down and Assam forest official camps have been captured by aggressive people from across the border. Such incidents, about which news has been published in different media, have adversely impacted upon the people of Lakhimpur,” AYM central committee president Jadab Gogoi, executive president Dharma Kanta Gogoi and general secretary Anupam Saikia alleged in the memorandum.

Under such circumstances, the organization has demanded the Chief Minister to take steps to secure the native people residing at border areas, to stop the encroachment and to settle the sensitive issue permanently.
