KOKRAJHAR: A one-day workshop on major initiative of cooperative societies was held under the aegis of the Department of Cooperation, BTC, at Bodofa Cultural Complex on Wednesday. Members of as many as 20 registered cooperative societies participated in the workshop from different corners of Kokrajhar district.

Chief Executive Member of BTC, Pramod Boro inaugurated the workshop on major initiative by lighting the ceremonial lamp in presence of MLA Lawrence Islary, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies Jayanta Kherkhatary, Director of Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Assam, Hemanta Kr. Das, and other dignitaries.

In his speech, CEM Pramod Boro said members of at least 20 cooperative societies of Kokrajhar district had participated in the workshop on major initiative organized by the department. He said cooperative movement had regained momentum for economic development in the region. He said the BTC government was looking for economic revolution through cooperative societies as it is the best platform to facilitate opportunities to unemployed youths in various sectors. He said there were many success stories of cooperative societies in India for economic development and thus there is every possibility of sustaining economy in BTC too for which the council has taken up major initiatives. He called upon all cooperative societies to be active and productive.

Boro said there were over 4,000 registered cooperative societies in BTC of which 1,500 societies are active, which is very significant for economic development. He said there were some very active cooperative societies whose annual turnover ranges from Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore.

“To provide livelihood to the unemployed individuals of BTC, the council government has started handloom mission, sericulture mission, fish mission etc. under Bodofa Livelihood Mission,” he said, adding that 40 clusters have been created and organized in handloom through which 12,000 weavers have been involved. He said Rs 1200 crore has been earmarked for implementing the missions. He also said the council government will provide all necessary assistance to the cooperative societies for economic development of the region.
