Assam: 10 Dead, 90 Infected With Japanese Encephalitis

Guwahati: At least 10 people have lost their lives to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam in the few days, the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam said.

As per an official statement of NHM, around 98 Cases of JE have been detected in the state since July.

Of 12 new fresh cases, three were reported from the district of Morigaon, two each from the Karimganj, Nagaon, and Sonitpur districts, and one from the districts of Chirang, Darrang, and Tinsukia.

Meanwhile, two deaths were reported in Barpeta and Jorhat districts taking the death toll number to 10.

Notably, JE and Malaria kill many people in Assam every year, specifically during the monsoon season which usually starts in May and stretches to October.

The NHM has also issued a standard operating procedure and guidelines to tackle the situation arising from the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis.

Reportedly, last year, at least 40 deaths were reported due to Japanese Encephalitis.
