Assam: 100 Passengers Stranded on Ferry in the Middle of Brahmaputra Near Majuli

MAJULI: A ferry, from Nimati ghat to Majuli, with passengers on board was stranded in the Brahmaputra river near Majuli in Assam on Friday. The ferry was transporting people and multiple vehicles. Nearly Eight automobiles, 40 motorcycles, and more than a hundred people were on board the ferry.

According to sources, the ferry left at 9 a.m. instead of its scheduled time of 8 a.m. due to heavy fog. But after departing from the Aflamukh ferry ghat, it became stuck in the middle of the river. Currently, it is unclear what caused the occurrence.

Earlier this month the Majuli residents were saved from another horrific incident. A passenger Ro Pax ferry coming towards Nimati from Aflamukh Par ghat was stuck in the middle of the Brahmaputra river.

The incident was feared to have taken place due to an overload of luggage on the ferry. The stranded ferry was stuck due to an overload consisting of four-wheelers and about 50 two-wheelers along with hundreds of passengers. It is learned that Pitambar Dev Goswami, the satrap of Auniati Satra in Majuli along with other people, was also trapped in the ferry. The ferry was stuck in the sand. However, after some time it managed to reach Nimati ghat.

According to sources, such incidents have become very common in Majuli. In another incident, on October 10, heavy fog in Majuli caused a passenger ferry to become stuck in the middle of the Brahmaputra river. At four in the morning, the ferry from Aflamukh to Nimati was stranded in the sand.

The residents of Majuli have also expressed concern about the fact that passenger boats have become stuck three times so far this month. Now it appears that getting into the boat signals impending peril and due to the excess of cargo on the boats, it has become a death trap now.
