GUWAHATI: As many as thirteen cadres of a left-wing militant outfit operating in the state have surrendered in Cachar and Dibrugarh districts on Thursday.

Notably, these thirteen cadres belonged to Communist Party of India (Maoist) and were associates of the outfit's leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias 'Kanchan Da' who was arrested earlier in Cachar district.

The 72-year-old leader who is also a Central Committee Member was arrested on March 6 from a tea garden under Udharbond Police Station in Cachar district of Assam. As per information, the veteran leader was assigned to constitute a state-level committee of Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was further tasked to facilitate a 'red corridor' from a neighbouring nation to other left-extremism affected states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Sharing the surrender of the 13 CPI (Maoist) cadres on his Twitter handle on Thursday, Assam Police Special Director General of Police GP Singh said, "13 cadres of proscribed CPI-M joined mainstream today – leaving the path of violence behind – at Dibrugarh and Cachar. They are associates of CPI (M) leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee (alias) Kanchan da who was arrested earlier this year by Assam Police."

It may be mentioned here that the Assam Government had earlier received requests for surrender from at least nine people who identified themselves as Maoists. Additional Superintendent of Police of Dibrugarh District, Bitul Chetia had stated that their team is trying to verify their connection with the CPI (Maoist).

The ASP stated that while one of them have links with the outfit, no information on record is available on the eight others.

Earlier this month, two others were apprehended in Dibrugarh for suspected links with CPI (Maoist). The police seized one pistol, magazine and ammunition from the arrested duo.

Another associate of Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias 'Kanchan da' identified as Samrat Chakraborty was arrested in Cachar some weeks back on the basis of information furnished by the veteran CPI (Maoist) leader during interrogation.
