HAJO: In another case of human trafficking reported from the Kamrup district, a 16-year-old girl hailing from Milpar in Hajo block was rescued on Friday from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, with the help of the NGO Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD), and members of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and a partner NGO of the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation of America.
Based on information received by ACRD, the girl was trafficked after being lured by a trafficker named Mohibur Ali on the pretext of marriage. Reportedly, the accused was planning on selling the girl to a man in Karnataka. On receiving the information, the NGO got it touch with Assam Police and along with the members of BBA and the partner NGO, the girl was immediately rescued and produced before the Child Welfare Committee and later placed at a shelter home temporarily.
The victim along with the accused was on Saturday brought to Hajo Police Station and the accused is being interrogated, stated a press release. “The case was reported to us yesterday and our team immediately jumped into action. We were able to rescue the girl in the nick of time. We are grateful to the Assam Police and BBA and their teams in Lucknow for their immediate action,” said Prerna Changkakati, Executive Director, ACRD.
