SILCHAR: The arrest of three Kuki dacoits at Kabuganj near the Mizoram border was indeed a wake-up call for the people of Cachar as these youths, shelteted in a relief camp at Kolasib in Mizoram, crossed the border and looted at least three shops in last few weeks.
The three youths –Dimngel Lalboi Michael, Paojalen Dimngel and Thangboi Dimngel– are residents of Kangkopki, the most affected district in the ethnic clashes in Manipur. They had taken shelter in the Kolasib relief camp. On Friday, they looted a hardware shop in Cachar’s Sonabarighat area. They came in a SUV car with Mizoram registration number though Manipur police sticker was pasted on the vehicle. Sonai and Dholai police chased the car and finally nabbed the dacoits. They admitted that they had earlier robbed a liquor shop in Jitighat and a petrol pump in Sonai. After the operation they used to return to the relief camp. Police recovered two pistols and some ammunition from their possession. Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen said, “People of the district should keep vigil and if any suspicious person is noticed, the people should immediately inform the police.”
The ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur had resulted in the influx of refugees in neighbouring Barak Valley for the last five months. Drug peddlers and anti-social elements belonging to Manipur seem to have taken advantage of the situation. Earlier, police had arrested a few persons coming from Manipur to sell drugs.
