Assam: 4 Suspected Terrorists Nabbed by NIA in Goalpara, Bongaigaon Districts

Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recently apprehended four suspected terrorists in separate operations carried out in Assam's Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts. These individuals had previously been arrested by the NIA last year but were recently released on bail. The search operations, conducted by a special team of the NIA with the assistance of the Assam Police, began on Friday.

According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Goalpara district, Rakhesh Reddy, the NIA was conducting the operation based on a case registered at their Guwahati office. The local police provided support as directed but did not possess specific information about the case.

The individuals arrested in Goalpara have been identified as Abdus Suwahan, Jalauddin, and Abdus Suwahan, while the person apprehended in Bongaigaon is Hafizur Rahman. The NIA had initially detained these four men in August of the previous year based on specific information.

Hafizur Rahman, who worked as a teacher at Markazul Ma Arif Qariana Madrasa in Goalpara, was detained on August 26 last year due to his alleged involvement in terrorist activities. Subsequently, the state government demolished the madrasa.

While a district court in Assam granted bail to Subhan, Sheikh, and Subahan, their bail was rejected in a higher court, leading to their rearrest, as confirmed by officials. The NIA did not issue an official statement regarding the matter.

Rahman was granted bail by the NIA for a limited period, but he failed to report to the authorities after the bail period ended. He was directed by the NIA court to appear, but he missed that as well. Consequently, the agency arrested him, and he might face additional charges for contempt of court, according to officials.

In September, the NIA registered two cases against these individuals, connecting them to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), following which they were arrested. The cases were filed in Guwahati under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The charges include criminal conspiracy, attempting to wage war against the nation, conspiring to commit certain offenses against the state, and recruiting or being recruited for a terrorist act.

These arrests highlight the continuous efforts of the NIA and local authorities to combat terrorism and ensure the safety and security of the region. The investigation and legal proceedings will continue as the authorities gather evidence and construct a strong case against the arrested individuals.
