Assam: 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Dhekiajuli, Tremor Felt in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: On Friday morning, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Assam, causing tremors to be felt throughout Guwahati. According to reports, the earthquake occurred at approximately 10.6 a.m. The epicentre is estimated to be near Dhekiajuli in the Assam district of Sonitpur.

Meanwhile, tremors might be felt as far away as Bhutan.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), a 3.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Union Territory of Ladakh on Thursday night. At 10:22 p.m., the tremor was felt. So yet, no damage has been reported. The earthquake was 10 km deep.

On May 29, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocked Assam's Dhekiajuli at 8:03 a.m. The earthquakes were felt in adjacent countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, and China. As the shocks were detected several kilometres away from the epicentre, panicked locals fled their homes.

On May 28, a moderate earthquake registering 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Meghalaya. There were no reports of damage or casualties.

On 17 April, an earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter Scale shook areas of Assam. The quake struck at 4:52 p.m., according to the National Centre for Seismology. No casualties or property damage have been reported. The epicentre was located in the Kamrup district and was 10 kilometres deep, according to the report. The tremor was felt throughout the state, including Guwahati, the state capital.

The North Eastern region is located in a strong seismic zone, hence earthquakes occur regularly.

In April, a comparable earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter Scale was felt in portions of Manipur. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km below the surface. The tremor was detected in southern Manipur's Bishnupur district and surrounding areas on Sunday, April 16, according to the NCS.

In May, earthquake shocks were felt in various parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a magnitude 5.2 earthquake 70 km southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at roughly 10.19 a.m.
