GUWAHATI: In recent reports emerging on Monday, it was revealed that a significant amount of cannabis had been confiscated in Gogamukh, Assam. Officials conducted an operation aimed at cracking down on the smuggling of illegal substances, successfully seizing a stash of cannabis from Tingiri village in the Dhemaji district of Assam. The seized cannabis weighed around 5.2 kilograms and was estimated to have a value ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.

The individual detained in connection with this incident was identified as Firoze Pegu and was apprehended on charges of smuggling. In addition to his arrest, officials confiscated a motorcycle that was found to be in his possession. The authorities have launched further investigations into the matter, currently ongoing.

In a separate incident earlier this month, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) collaborated in a joint operation, resulting in the seizure of 5 kilograms of illegal drugs from a train in Nagaon district, Assam. During the operation, which took place at Lumding railway station, two individuals were arrested. T Boro, an official from GRP Lumding, reported that nine packets of ganja, weighing approximately 5 kilograms, were recovered from the Kanchanjunga train. The two women in possession of the drugs, both hailing from Bihar, were apprehended.

Another case involved the seizure of a substantial quantity of cannabis, weighing 70 kilograms, in Tamulpur, Assam. Acting on information received from undisclosed sources, the police chased a vehicle transporting the drugs. The pursuit concluded at Ghogha Bridge in Darkuchi on the Rangia-Bhutan road, where the cannabis was confiscated. The current market value of the seized cannabis is yet to be determined. Unfortunately, the peddlers managed to escape from police custody.

Furthermore, on August 2 last year, a joint operation conducted by the Central Reserve Police Force and the Assam Police led to the seizure of narcotics worth ₹15 crores from Assam's Karbi Anglong district. The operation resulted in the apprehension of three drug smugglers.

These incidents shed light on the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies in Assam to combat the smuggling and distribution of illegal substances. Authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of individuals involved in such activities, conducting operations and making arrests to curb drug trafficking within the state.
