GUWAHATI: Karimganj police apprehended one person and seized 690 grams of heroin from his possession in Patharkandi of Karimganj district of Assam on Sunday.

Acting on secret information, a team of Karimganj Police launched an operation at Kabariband village under Patharkandi police station and recovered 49 soap cases containing 690 grams of heroin from a house said to be owned by one Jamil Uddin.

While one person has been apprehended, the house- owner Jamil Uddin managed to flee from the spot during the police operation.

Partha Pratim Das, Additional Superintendent of Police of Karimganj district said that the recovered drugs were kept hidden inside an LPG cylinder.

The market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs 5 crores.

Meanwhile, further investigation is underway into the incident.

Hojai also witnessed a similar drug-related activity a few months ago this year in March, when heroin worth 3 crores was seized from a Guwahati-bound train that was coming from the business hub of Nagaland, Dimapur.

Hojai's neighboring district Morigaon also witnessed a similar drug-related activity in April this year when drugs worth 4.5 crores were seized from a truck and a pickup van.

The Northeast has gained a very bad name of being the drug corridor of the country as drugs from Southeast Asia move through the northeast to other parts of India.

Assam is headed towards a drug-free future under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. CM Sarma, a few days ago in the ongoing Autumn session of the Assam Assembly, said that the Assam Police seized drugs worth more than Rs.655 crores and arrested more than 4700 people across Assam in the previous year.
