GOLAGHAT: Three players from the Barpeta District of the state were able to win laurels for the district in the 6th All Assam Senior Pencak Silat Championship. The event was organised in the Sarupathar locality of Golaghat on June 10 and 11.

Dr Mahbub Ur Rahman of Barpeta was able to win the gold medal in the solo artistic event category and the bronze medal in the tunggal event. Salman Hussian bagged a gold, while Rajashree Sarkar bagged another silver for the district.

Pencak Silat is a martial art practised in many countries of Southeast Asia and will be introduced in the 37th National Games which will be hosted in Goa in October 2023. The top performers of the 6th All Assam Senior Pencak Silat Championship will represent the state in the upcoming national games.

Previously assam bagged three medals in the All India Inter University Pencak Silat Tournament, a kind of martial arts, that concluded at Amritsar, Punjab on Sunday. Among the three medals, one is silver which was collected by Achyut Boro. Prerana Hazarika and Dibakar Rabha won one bronze medal each in the competition. All the players, studying at the Lovely Professional University of Punjab, represented the same University in the championship.

Assam had also bagged two medals in the 6th Pencak Silat Federation Cup which concluded in Goa today. Among the two medals, one is silver which was won by Prerana Hazarika, Jharna Barman collected a bronze medal from the championship.

Silat is a common name for a group of indigenous martial arts from the Nusantara region and the surrounding geocultural areas of Southeast Asia. It is traditionally practised in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. Officially called Pencak Silat, it was included in the Southeast Asian Games as well as other region-wide tournaments. It made its debut in the South East Asian Games of 1987 and the Asian Games in 2018.
