Assam: 6th Bn SSB seizes timber-laden tractors in Kokrajhar district

KOKRAJHAR: The 6th Bn SSB on Thursday seized timber-laden tractors in the Alipur area of the reserve forest near the Bhutan border under Haltugaon Division in the Kokrajhar district. The seizure has proved that the timber smugglers are still active in broad daylight in the reserve forest at the nose of the forest department.

Sources from the SSB said the joint patrolling was conducted by the SSB and forest department at Alipur area in the reserve forest at 10.30 am on Thursday and they seized 1,630 CFT wooden logs worth Rs 19,65,000. The team under the command of SI/GD Nitin Joshi of BOP-F. Coy along with OR’s 08 executed the operation with forest personnel. Sources said the smugglers fled the scene and the seized items were handed over to the Forest Range Office at Ultapani. Recently, a timber smuggler of Jharbari area was killed by forest guards near Digli when a group of 16 smugglers carrying timber logs in their bicycles failed to negotiate with the forest officials. Later, the Range Officer of Jharbari Range was arrested and sent to jail.
