SILCHAR : At least 800 puja committees in Cachar district would receive Rs 10,000 from the State government as donation, a district administration source informed. The amount would be disbursed to the organisers on Friday. The list of puja committees entitled for the grant was prepared by the Revenue Circle offices. In Karimganj, 438 puja committees had been selected for the grant. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently announced that his Cabinet had approved grant of Rs 10,000 for puja committees which had been organizing Durga Puja for at least three years.
Meanwhile, Barak Democratic Front while welcoming the State government’s decision suggested that the amount should at least be raised upto Rs 25,000. “Bihu committees get Rs 1 lakh. To keep parity with this, Durga Puja committees too should be given at least Rs 25,000”, Pradip Dutta Roy, the chief convener of BDF argued. He said, the four-day festival require huge budget and Rs 10,000 was an inadequate amount.
Bijay Malakar, the BJP MLA said, the decision of the government to extend financial assistance to the puja committees should be seen as a goodwill gesture. Further in the rural areas, budget for a small scale puja committee did not even exceed Rs 50,000. For such puja organisers Rs 10,000 would be of great help, he said.
