DIGBOI: In a significant breakthrough, a notorious burglar responsible for a spate of burglaries at temples in Digboi has been caught by the police. He was identified as Ravi Thapa, a resident of Golai. The thief's criminal activities included stealing valuables and equipment used in pujas, leaving the general populace sleep deprived and concerned.

The brazen burglaries, which occurred on June 16 and July 22, respectively, targeted two temples in the area. Ravi Thapa allegedly broke into the temples by tampering with locks and making off with the donation boxes, as well as other precious items used in religious ceremonies. Both events were captured on the temples' CCTV footage, which proved instrumental in identifying the culprit.

The vigilance of the public from Digboi town led to the capture of Ravi Thapa last night. Frustrated and fed up with the repeated thefts and the resulting disruption of religious practices, the public took matters into their own hands, delivering a form of rough justice before handing him over to the police.

In a swift follow-up operation, Digboi police also arrested Shafiqul Islam, the owner of a dump in Digboi Ramanagar, for buying and possessing stolen goods from Ravi Thapa's burglaries.

In the meantime, the diligent DIgboi Police has registered a criminal case under Section 457/380 of the Indian Penal Code number 168/2023. This section pertains to offences of house trespass or burglary, and punishment for theft respectively, reflecting the severity of his actions. Following due legal procedures, the accused Ravi Thapa has been remanded in custody and awaits further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, acting on information, a team of Panbazar police under the supervision of SI Pranab Deka, SI Jitul Das, and SI Nikhil Ranjan Nag arrested a miscreant from the Ambari Kali Mandir area and recovered several stolen items on Monday. The accused has been identified as Ram Das. According to sources, the Panbazar police received a complaint from Lakhi Kalita informing them that he purchased a sound system from Pankaj Music Corporation in front of Lakhtokia and loaded it in a vehicle, but on the way to AT Road, an unknown miscreant stole one of the packets of sound mixer, while there was a traffic jam. Meanwhile, the team, when searching Ram Das’s rented place, recovered other stolen items like one Dell Lap top battery, eight packets of disposable ECG Electrodes, 25 spinal anaesthesia injections, 10 Elastic Adhesive bandages, and two iron pillow block bearings, which are known to have been stolen from different running vehicles.
